SPINE20 Recommends Social Inclusion as a Key to Prevent and Management of Spinal Disability

Prof. André Bussières traveled to Rio de Janeiro in August to participate in the annual meeting for SPINE20, an international think tank dedicated to promoting spine care policy to the G20 countries.

SPINE20 is an initiative that aims to elevate the importance of spine care on a global scale by fostering collaboration among healthcare professionals, researchers, and policymakers. The program provides a platform for advocates and experts to come together, share knowledge, and promote best practices in spine care, particularly in underserved communities.

The annual meeting takes place concurrently with the G20 Summit. This year’s meeting in Rio de Janeiro in 2024 was designed to advance the mission of improving spine health worldwide. The theme, “Spinal Disability: Social Inclusion as a Key to Prevention and Management” underscored the importance of addressing spinal disorders through a lens of social equity. The goals of the meeting included:

  1. Knowledge Sharing: Participants engaged in discussions and presentations that highlight the latest research, innovations, and treatment methodologies in spine care.

  2. Collaboration Development: The meeting served as a networking opportunity for stakeholders from various regions, encouraging partnerships that can help implement better spine care practices globally.

  3. Advocacy and Awareness: SPINE20 aims to raise awareness about the importance of accessible spine care, especially in low-resource settings, and advocate for policies that support equitable access.

  4. Capacity Building: The focused on training and educational opportunities for healthcare providers, equipping them with the skills necessary to deliver high-quality spine care.

  5. Action-Oriented Outcomes: Participants worked towards actionable recommendations and strategies that can be implemented in different regions to enhance spine health and care practices.

By bringing together diverse voices and expertise, the SPINE20 meeting in Rio de Janeiro made significant strides toward improving spinal health and outcomes for individuals worldwide.

The results of the meeting were published as formal recommendations available for download at spine20.net and in the Global Spine Journal.

As a collaborating organization, World Spine Care supports the recommendations of SPINE20 to ensure access to high-quality, evidence-based, and affordable spine services for all.
